World shortage of vitamins A & E for animal feed production due to a major fire at BASF's facility in Germany. Click on image below for full details.
This will quickly have a significant effect on the cost of bag minerals too.
The following is information extracted from Feed Info News Service which provides a helpful summary:
Vitamins: What Happened Last Month?
Here is a quick round-up of what has been happening in the vitamin markets in recent weeks.
The vitamin markets have taken centre stage in recent weeks, ever more so since the October 31 fire which occurred at BASF's Citral plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany. This sparked extreme volatility in the markets for vitamin A 1000 and vitamin E 50 and the effects are still being felt today.
BASF not only had to declare Force Majeure for its citral and isoprenol based aroma ingredients, but also had to shut down vitamin A and E plants. The company will only be able to restart these plants once supply of citral is re-established and the corresponding intermediates for vitamin A and E become available. The problem is that BASF isn't the only player concerned. Its citral plant also produces precursors for vitamin A manufacture, which it supplies to other producers of vitamin A. According to Feedinfo estimates, around 40-45% of the global vitamin A feedgrade market is currently supplied by precursors which are manufactured at the citral facility. Adisseo, for instance, has said it will significantly reduce output of all its vitamin A products due to the Force Majeure events.
The vitamin A market was already tight before the October 31 incident and there is still no sign of an improvement in a market where considerable strain continues to exist on the supply chain.
The global vitamin E market, meanwhile, also remains in structural oversupply. But short term the market is tight, not only due to the effects of the BASF force majeure but also to the lower than usual output in China during the summer months. In another mid-November development, DSM announced plans to acquire Amyris' Brotas facility and arnesene-related intellectual property - considered a new low-cost pathway for the manufacture of vitamin E.
Finally, vitamin D3 prices in Europe remain at levels which are close to historical highs. India's Fermenta Biotech reported a fire incident at its vitamin D3 manufacturing facility in Dahej, Gujarat State on November 29. The company had to stop offering vitamin D3 products and hopes to resume manufacturing operations at the earliest.
